Overview
I always assumed this venue was inaccessible but I found out recently that this pub has some of the best access on the Grassmarket for wheelchair users. There is a quiet side entrance to the hotel next door which leads you to the pub’s main area and there is an accessible toilet.
Transport & Parking
The number 2 bus passes through Grassmarket but if coming on foot/wheels it can be quite a trek from the city centre as streets are narrow, winding and very bumpy. I’m also unsure about parking.
Access
Although there isn’t level access in the main door, this can often be crowded anyway so I liked that the side entrance was quieter and had a wider door. To enter this way you have to go down a small and a bit steel ramp into The Grassmarket Hotel and then through the doors on the left. There is a mixture of seating indoors and also a seating area outside which is great in the warm weather!
Toilets
No Changing Places. No need for RADAR key. This toilet is at the back of the venue and is big enough to fit a powerchair and a companion in. It was very clean when I visited and the door wasn’t extremely heavy so I could have probably managed independently.
Staff
Very helpful when showing me around and holding doors when I needed.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I ordered food from the app whilst sitting outside. When moving around indoor and outdoor seating areas you are asked to wear a mask. Indoors the pub had spaced out seating and did not have bar orders so that people stayed in their seats
