Overview

Berwick upon Tweed Railway Station is on the main London King's Cross to Edinburgh route. It has step free access via lifts. Special assistance staff our outstanding.

Transport & Parking

5

Berwick upon Tweed Railway Station connects trains between England and Scotland. There is a bus stop outside the station, in its concourse.

Access

5

The station offers step free access. In front of the station is a concourse. There are automatic doors at the entrance and into the waiting room area. There is a bridge with steps and lifts over to the platforms. On the day I visited one of the lifts was not working, but it was scheduled to be fixed. There was seating, with back support and handrails in the waiting area and on the platforms.

Toilets

5

The accessible toilet I used was located by the main entrance, inside the waiting room area. It required the use of a RADAR key. The door was push button and to lock it. The toilet was large but there were a couple of large bins inside. There were plenty of grab rails and an emergency cord that reached towards the floor. It was clean and tidy.

Staff

At the end of my holiday in the Scottish Borders I took the train home from Berwick upon Tweed. I arrived on an extremely rainy day several hours before my train was due to depart, as the weather was so bad and I had my case with me I had abandoned my plans for the day and made straight for the station. When I arrived I told staff I was there, as I had booked special assistance. They checked at my request how much a ticket for an earlier train would be, but as it would have doubled the price of my existing ticket I declined. I then went to sit in Costa Coffee with my kindle for a few hours, happy I was in the dry. A couple of hours later a member of staff came to me. They had arranged for me to get an earlier train, at no additional cost, and it was leaving in about 20 minutes. I was stunned. The staff had gone out of their way to arrange this and it came as a lovely surprise. I was escorted over to my platform, my luggage was put on the train and I was helped to my seat. The staff also ensured that King's Cross had been made aware that I was travelling on the train, and their special assistance staff met me at the other end. This is amazing service, I was deeply touched that they had gone out of their way to do this. I am sorry I don't remember the name of the two members of staff who assisted me but I would like to say a huge thank you.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Special assistance staff are amazing. Highly recommend and would be happy to visit this station again.
