This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Powerchair
Overview
Most buildings have full or partial wheelchair access with only the terraced houses in the Town and the Drift Mine in the Colliery Yard not having access. However photo/information packs are available for those who are unable to access exhibits upon request.
Transport & Parking
There is plenty of accessible parking on site with spaces nearer to the entrance for those who prefer. There is also a regular GoNorthEast bus service between Newcastle and Chester-le-Street which drops visitors off at the museum and has a ramp for wheelchairs. The site has a limited number of wheelchairs/scooters for hire available from the Reception. There are also period buses and tramps which operate in a loop, stopping at every area of the museum. Whilst steps onto trams/buses are steep there is a period accessible bus with a tail lift and capacity to secure 4 wheelchairs/powerchairs.
Access
*See Access Rating Overall Description. Due to the nature of the museum there are some cobbled/uneven surfaces but largely surfaces are good.
Toilets
There is at least one accessible toilet at each area of the museum with grip rails and plenty of space for a wheelchair. The most equipped toilets are located in the entrance building.
Staff
Staff around the museum are really friendly and more than happy to help with it be to ask about access or with regards to photo packs of areas which are inaccessible due to the historic nature of the buildings on site.

For more information there is an access information document available via the website which has lots of helpful information regarding transport around the site, how to access buildings and the locations of the nearest disabled toilets. Information about accessibility is also available on the plan a visit part of the website.
