Overview
This is a wheelchair accessible sports venue in the heart of Aberdeen. It has level access with accessible parking and lift access to all sporting areas.
Transport & Parking
There are three accessible parking bays at the main entrance of the building. However, as I was visiting the centre as part of a wheelchair sports group, these spaces were all taken by the time I arrived. I went down to the car park at the 'event entrance' , and I called for a staff member to come down to open the door for me. Not ideal, but at least they have looked for an answer to the problem.
Access
Signage for car parking and accessible toilets wasn't the clearest. There was level access and access to lifts between floors throughout the building, and I spoke to a young wheelchair user who regularly uses the gym and is impressed by how accessible it is.
Toilets
There was enough space in the accessible loo for me, but it could prove a little difficult for some people as there is two doors to negotiate your way through. They could have been cleaner, as there was a toilet brush on the floor etc, but that may just have been a messy customer who was in before me.
Staff
The staff member who answered the phone to me came straight down to give access. At every opportunity they offered help and support which is great.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The Beach leisure centre is home to the Grampian Flyers wheelchair basketball club. I was given a warm welcome and was very impressed by what they do. They offer wheelchair basketball to both adults and juniors, so if you are in the area, get involved.
