Summer Walks In The Woods
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Powerchair
Overview
Spacious woods with different routes and some smooth accessible pathways.
Transport & Parking
The car park here isn't marked out on the ground so there aren't any designated disabled parking spaces and there isn't a lot of space for cars to park. I'd say you'd only really be able to get about 9 or 10 cars in the car park. We managed on the day though to get out of my car at the back and also get out of the car park when leaving even though my car is bigger and there were cars parked all over the place. The ground of the car park is a little gravelled but I managed to drive on it in my powerchair without any issues. I'm not too sure about the public transport near Backmuir Woods but it is only about 2 minutes if that from Birkhill which has buses come from Dundee.
Access
At the start of our walk the pathways were very smooth and wide making it a very enjoyable visit, I was very surprised by the pathways with it being in a wooded area. Then I came across what I was expecting, tree roots and big stones within the pathway. I did get stuck on a tree trunk a little as I didn't see it hidden in the pathway but I soon got free again with help from my carer. These types of obstructions appeared randomly around the walkway and I probably should have turned around and went back the other way at times but I was determined to just keep going. I didn't unfortunately get any photos of the rough areas of the pathways as I was concentrating on not getting stuck again. There were different routes you could go around the woods and I would say I didn't find the signage very helpful with knowing where to go. My carer who was with me does the walk a lot so she knew where to go but I think I would of got lost if I didn't go with here. I spotted a little chair on our walk which I have pictured below but I didn't see anymore. My carer said there is more dotted around the pathways though which is good for people needing to have a rest.
Toilets
I didn't see any toilets at all when visiting here so I can't comment on them.
Staff
I don't know if any staff help maintain the woods but I didn't see anyone around when I visited so I can't comment on staff.
