Overview
Much thought has gone into making this ground floor holiday rental apartment a great place for wheelchair users to stay. The location is excellent and quiet, with nearby shops. Kitchen and bathroom are well-equipped for wheelchair users, there is an external power door, generous circulating space and wide internal doors.
Transport & Parking
Can't comment on the parking. Metrobus M46 (every 10 minutes, 24/7) connects to the nearest wheelchair-accessible U-bahn station (Wittenbergplatz) and Zoologischer Garten train station. Berlin buses have wheelchair spaces and a manual ramp can be deployed by the driver if needed. The bus stop is 4 minutes level walk/wheel away. Wittenbergplatz is 15 minutes level wheel/walk away, and KaDeWe, Berlin's uber-Harrods is there.
Access
Short shallow ramp to a wide electronic door which opens inwards when you input the security code you are given. Sliding glass doors give wide access to the double bedroom and a wide conventional door gives access to the bathroom. Only the basement (used for storage and with a rowing machine & table football game) is not wheelchair accessible. In addition to the bedroom there is a spacious living room (with double sofa/bed) cum dining room cum kitchen.
Toilets
Excellent. Wheel in wet-room shower with seat and grab rails, toilet with grab rails either side, wash basin at wheelchair height and non-slip tiles on the floor. There is a second, non wheelchair accessible toilet off the bathroom.
Staff
We booked through HomeAway.com and they were prompt and helpful in their dealings with us.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The wheelchair user says it's the best wheelchair accessible apartment she has ever stayed in. There are local bars and restaurants at Viktoria-Luise Plate, an attractive square with public gardens and fountain 5 minutes level wheel/walk away. The local mini supermarket, Kaiser's, is by the bus stop - access is a bit tricky and the till-aisles quite narrow.
