Overview

It what I expected but better. Once inside the building I was surprised by the size of the exhibition and the stories it told. The museum and birthplace combine an old traditional weavers cottage with the twentieth century exhibition hall.

Transport & Parking

4.5

Arriving at the Birthplace Museum we found the large car park and the accessible parking bays - they could do with some more obvious signage- it was also a short walk down the hill from the Abbey Church and the Carnegie Library.

Access

4

Entrance to the building for wheelchair users and those requiring level access was through a side door immediately opposite the accessible parking bays. This door is usually locked but a handy doorbell will summon assistance and a warm welcome. You wheel in and you are at the edge of the cottage which is up a step or two. The cottage is not wheelchair accessible but a handy plan and pictures give you a good idea of what there is. The route to the main exhibition passes by the reception and small shop area. Once inside the exhibition hall it was surprising how large it was. The exhibits were varied and some interactive.

Toilets

4.5

The accessible toilet, and toilets, are located in a separate part of the building. You go out to the garden area and a short path takes you to the entrance door to the building. A large hallway leads to the accessible loo. With a wide door and lots of space it was very good. Also spotlessly clean and had everything you needed.

Staff

Without doubt what made the visit was the enthusiastic and friendly people we met. Top marks!
