Overview

Fascinating museum almost all of which is wheelchair accessible, with great views of Aberdeen harbour and a pleasant cafe.

Transport & Parking

3.5

Can't comment on the parking. The museum is close to Union Street, which is very well served by buses and not far from the railway station. The streets leading down from Union Street are quite steep. There are bus stops in Guild Street which is a reasonably short and level wheel/walk from the museum.

Access

4.5

Level access to the main entrance. The swing door is heavy but a staff member saw us coming and opened it. Once inside, circulating space is good, there's a lift to all levels and only one small section of the museum is not wheelchair accessible.

Toilets

4

There are accessible loos on the ground (cafe) and second levels. Doors quite heavy. Side transfer just possible from one side in both cases. Both well equipped with grab rails and all facilities sensibly positioned. No sign of an alarm cord in either accessible loo.

Staff

Alert, friendly and very helpful. We felt welcomed.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Admission is free, the displays are varied and interesting, with plenty for children to interact with. Part of the museum is in a former Kirk, and the centrepiece of the modern extension is a massive model of the Murchison Oil Platform. The Museum opens 7 days a week, 10am to 5pm Monday-Saturday, 12 noon to 3pm Sunday.
