Overview
I have been to this magnificent setting before, but only to the gardens and I wanted to go back to the House as Sir Walter Scott is a personal hero! I wasn't disappointed.
Transport & Parking
Personally for me its a 20 minute walk from Tweedbank, the last stop on the new Boarders Railway line (roughly a 1h 20m ride from Waverly). Who doesn't love a railway journey and it has opened up the boarders to those without a car. The buses in the area are great, going to Abbotsford House and Melrose town (about a 10 minute bus ride).
Access
The new visitor centre is very accessible, with a great loo and a lift. Only thing is that the door out to the garden and to the house is not a push door and heavy to open. The paths around the gardens are wide and you can get to most places without meeting steps.

Staff
Th staff in the visitor centre were very helpful asked if we needed a career ticket for free, also we are able to go back for free again if we go again within the year. At the house the volunteers were equally as helpful, recommending we do the Sir Walter Scott voice tour which was really interesting as well as informative. The audio guide works using infrared devices that you point at signs in the rooms. This was really accessible to me as it was as simple as point and click. However I understand this may not be as accessible to other people.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I love this place, it has beautiful views over the River Tweed, the gardens are beautiful, take a peak in the magnificent walled garden. The library is spectacular, I want mine to be that filled and rich one day! The house is a quite small and all on one level, so you you don't get bored either!
