Largs is a picturesque seaside town on the west coast of Scotland. Largs is located approximately thirty miles Southwest of Glasgow and is a very popular destination with tourists from around the UK and abroad.

Getting there

Probably one of the easiest ways to arrive in Largs is by train from Glasgow as it is the last stop on the Glasgow to Largs line. Largs is an accessible train station. Coming out of Largs train station brings you into the hub of the main town surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants. You can prebook passenger assistance on the train on 0800 912 2901 or online.

Alternatively, you can also come by car via the M8 motorway or by bus from Buchanan Street bus station in Glasgow.

If you arrive by train, you can admire the Largs Community Garden at Largs train station, part of which is accessible to the public. The path into the garden is fully wheelchair accessible.

The Battle of Largs

One thing that Largs is well known for is its annual Viking festival which will take place between late August and early September each year . The Viking festival commemorates the Battle of Largs (1263) which was the last mainland battle between the Scots and the Vikings. The festival begins with a parade through the Streets of Largs by various different community organisations and ends with the burning of a Viking longship to commemorate the defeat of the Vikings by the Scots led by King Alexander III.

Vikingar!

The Vikingar experience lets you step back in time to 1263 when the Vikings came from Norway to try in vain to conquer the town of Largs! The Vikingar experience has good wheelchair access, although the toilets are quite small. As part of the experience you will be taken around by a tour guide and allowed to try on a Viking helmet. There is a video at the end of the exhibition which explains more about how the Vikings arrived in Largs.

Within the same building there is a swimming pool with accessible changing facilities and a pool hoist. There is also access via a lift to a fitness suite upstairs which has a range of accessible fitness equipment which can be adapted for wheelchair users.

A trip overseas to Milport

While you are here why not take a trip on the ferry MV Loch Shira to Milport. Here you explore Garrison House as you take a walk around the Island. There is an accessible toilet at the ferry terminal at Largs.

Nardini’s

No trip to Largs is complete without an ice cream! Nardini’s first established in Largs in 1935. The traditional café reopened in 2008 after a period of refurbishment. The main café on the main street is no longer owned by the Nardini family, however, Nardini’s at the Moorings located near the ferry terminal is still owned by two of the Nardini brothers. Nardini’s menus are available to view online.

Other places to eat

There are a number of places to eat in Largs. For lunch or a snack you could try The Bagel Basket, Euan's Guide Ambassador M_M_D said it has “wonderful cake”, an “excellent accessible toilet” and “flat access”. You could also try Costa Coffee on Gallowgate street, it also has a good accessible toilet and there is a permanent ramp.  For something a bit more special try The Catch at Fins Restaurant, Jo_Eaglesham said that it is “worth a trip out for a special meal” in the 5 star review they left on Euan’s Guide.
