World Toilet Day 2022

World Toilet Day - Saturday 19 November 2022 

Did you know that World Toilet Day was first established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001 to tackle the global sanitation crisis? It’s been an official day recognised by the United Nations since 2013, and their aim is to ensure everyone has access to safe, sanitary toilets by 2030. Here at Euan’s Guide, we use World Toilet Day to raise awareness of the dangers closer to home when people use accessible toilets in the UK.

As we countdown to World Toilet Day, here are ways you can get involved….  

Review a Loo

Please review your favourite or local accessible loo! In the same way you might research where you’re going in terms of accessibility, sharing your knowledge helps other people doing the same. By leaving a review on EuansGuide.com you give other people the confidence to visit somewhere new – and we know from our past access surveys that information on accessible toilets is one of the most important considerations for disabled people when going out.

Make sure people know you have an accessible toilet! Putting details on your website and social media is the first step; the second is clear signage for disabled visitors who choose to come to your venue. Make sure team members know how to direct people too.

Cut The Clutter

Accessible toilets should have plenty of space - keep it clear so disabled people can move around easily and without stress. Don’t put bins in a transfer space and find somewhere else to store those highchairs.

Test And Tell

When was the last time you set the alarm off in your disabled loo? Does it work? If someone does raise the alarm, do your staff know what to do? If your alarm has a red pull cord, make sure this hangs to the floor.

Safer Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets have an emergency assistance alarm system often with a red pull cord that is easily identifiable and reachable from the toilet and the floor close to the toilet. Far too often these cords are tied up, cut short or wrapped around other equipment meaning people in distress are unable to raise the alarm, leaving them trapped with no way to ask for help.
