World Toilet Day: 150,000 Accessible Toilets made safer
World Toilet Day seems like a great day to announce that we’ve made 150,000 accessible toilets safer with our Red Cord Cards!
A massive Thank You to each and every one of our Toilet Warriors who have been helping us make accessible toilets safer over the past 10 years.
We started this campaign following feedback from our community… We know from our Access Survey that 71% of disabled people have come across an accessible toilet they were unable to use, and over 10% have had to use an emergency cord to to call for help - but all too often, the red emergency cord is cut short or tied up, causing unnecessary risk to the lives of disabled people.
So we created our Red Cord Cards, which attach to the red emergency cords in accessible toilets to let people know why they need to hang freely to the ground, becoming a potentially life saving tool from our small but mighty charity, and this is how they’ve helped:
“This is the best idea I've seen to immediately improve disability access. I've been incredibly lucky not to have needed the red cord but I know I will someday soon and I dread that it will be the day that it's been GROUTED INTO THE TILES! out of the way. Or tied to the ceiling. Or anyone one of the incredibly stupid ways I've seen them removed from use.” — Toilet Warrior
“It has made me feel less alone in my plight to find decent accessible toilets - I have recently come across a couple of Euan's Guide red cord cards "in the wild", which shows that others out there are also attempting to fight the good fight.” — 2023 Access Survey Respondent
We’re so proud to have sent out 150,000 Red Cord Cards, but our quest isn’t over! Want to help us further?
Review a loo!
Have you ever been put off from visiting somewhere because you didn’t know about the loo?
76% of our community tell us they’ve avoided going somewhere because they knew it didn’t have an accessible toilet, and 49% said they’ve avoided going because they couldn't find information about an accessible toilet.*
Please help us share disabled access information by taking a few minutes to review an accessible loo. Good, bad, spotless - we want to hear it all!
Businesses - you can help too!
Do you run a business or work in a public space? Make sure you tell people about your accessible loo! Llist or update your listing on EuansGuide.com so disabled people know what to expect when they visit.
We can’t thank you enough for your help and support over the years. Let’s keep the momentum going – can we reach 200k in 2025?
