Six accessible cottages for an autumn getaway
For some, Autumn is about cosy nights in and brisk strolls crunching through golden leaves in the countryside. For others it’s about getting family and friends together, enjoying home-cooked food and indulging in Britain’s best village pubs! However you choose to spend autumn, here are six accessible cottages to consider for your next getaway.
Vulcan Lodge Cottages, Rhayader
(Sleeps 2 -8)
A rustic country inn in the heart of Wales has been transformed into five luxury holiday cottages, including two which have been designed with disabled guests in mind. The two accessible cottages, Middleton and Tudor, have adapted features such as magnifying lamps, highlighted sockets and cutlery aids. One guest described the cottages as ‘excellent’ and said:
“Both cottages had wheelchair access throughout, all grab rails in bathrooms. There was ample parking at the side of our cottage on tarmac.”
Coach Holiday Cottage, Norfolk
(Sleeps 6)
If you enjoy cosy nights in with a wood burner stove and a nearby village pub, you’ll feel right at home in Coach Holiday Cottage! The single-storey cottage has underfloor heating and aids such as a toilet surround, table raiser, adapted cutlery and more. Be aware that there is a step into the shower if you’re considering a stay at this cottage.
“There is only one word for us to described Coach Cottage and its lovely owner, an that is ‘perfect’. All the little touches were very much appreciated…access to the cottage is all paved with a very slight incline to the back door, where there is no step.”
Cheese Room Cottage, Shrewsbury
(Sleeps 2-3)
As the name suggest, Cheese Room Cottage was once used for making and storing cheese on the owners’ dairy farm. Today, the cottage has been described as ‘enchanting’ and accessible, and is listed on Euan’s Guide saying:
“The ground floor is all on one level with extra wide doors (850mm) …The kitchen area has wheelchair accessible single sink with drainer, cupboards with pull out / pull down shelves, wheelchair accessible electric touch-control induction hob. The main bedroom has a built-in wardrobe and chest of drawers allowing full wheelchair access to the two electric single beds which can be clipped together to make a superking bed. The single room upstairs for a family member / friend / carer has a single bed.”
Eildon Holiday Cottages, Melrose
(Sleeps 2-6)
The Scottish Borders are beautiful at this time of year, and the local area is great for walking trails, history and autumnal gardens! Eildon Holiday Cottages are made up of five wheelchair accessible self-catered cottages with ceiling tracking hoists in two of the cottages, and kick plate doors in all five. One guest loved staying here and wrote:
