March Disabled Access Review Roundup

Welcome to our round-up of disabled access received in March. We had another great selection of reviews to share, which have been written by our growing community of volunteer reviewers. Our reviewers want to share the experiences of disabled access across the UK to help other disabled people and their families and friends find great accessible places to go.

Places to visit

Stephet sent in an interesting review of the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. The review mentions,” Every effort made to accommodate someone like myself. Everywhere was wheelchair-accessible and it had good facilities for coffee plus snacks in the cafe and picnics facility outside.” With a good range of facilities, it sounds like the centre has something for everyone.

Lola had a great time visiting Matlock Farm Park with her carer. The farm park has installed a new Changing Places toilet, which makes it more accessible to lots of disabled people and their families. Lola says “Good that they have added a Changing Places.” This shows how important and accessible toilets can be for an accessible day out for all the family.

New reviewer Veegoranks_69 had a fantastic first visit to VIM Healthcare. The staff were very friendly and supportive during an initial fitness session, meaning they will go back for future sessions. “I can't wait to book regular visits. Please don't hesitate to pay Vim Healthcare a try!”

Finnberrys sent us a review of the de Havilland Aircraft Museum near London. It was an interesting day out for all the family, though some areas of accessibility could be improved. “It was a pleasant day out and I enjoyed learning about the history of some of our iconic aircraft. Given that we visited out of season and midweek, I would suggest that they need far more blue badge spaces... or at least to concrete a larger section of the car park.” This review shows the importance of giving constructive feedback to allow venues to improve and become more accessible.

Places to stay

Nellieg48 is a regular visitor to the Homeland Trust in Fife. In this review, she stayed in one of the lodges called Largo and gave very positive feedback on her stay with a five-star review. “Largo is one of the new lodges that are very comfortable, spotlessly clean, with a well-stocked kitchen.  The beds are very comfortable, and the bedding is beautiful. We have been visiting Homelands for many years, and we keep going back. I can’t recommend it enough.”

Zola2010 highly recommends the Ness Walk Hotel in Inverness. “Our stay could not have been more pleasant, and the hotel was probably the best one we have stayed in in terms of accessibility.”

Places to eat

IJ recommends Shish, which is a Turkish restaurant in Edinburgh. “Good Turkish food. Totally flat and fully accessible.”

Review of the month - March

This month we have had another great selection of reviews, so a big thank you goes out to our amazing volunteer reviewers. One review that stood out was Zola2010’s for the Ness Walk Hotel because it sounds like a really positive experience of visiting somewhere new.

“We stayed here for 3 nights - the hotel is in a lovely location and I was glad to see that the former hotel on the site had been given a significant makeover. Our stay could not have been more pleasant, and the hotel was probably the best one we have stayed in in terms of accessibility. The facilities were ideal, but on top of that the staff could not have done enough for us. We will definitely consider a return visit.

“Our room was right after the main entrance, which was great. No steps, and after a welcoming glass of champagne (nice touch), we were shown around and into our room. Inside the room, everything was easy to manouevre round, and there was a very comfortable chair with arms. We were able to get in and out of the restaurant and bar without any problems.”
