Making Euan’s Guide more accessible for people with learning disabilities 

To mark Learning Disabilities Week 2023, we wanted to tell you how we’re trying to EuansGuide.com more accessible for people with learning disabilities.  

We are currently trialling Easy Read review forms with our community! We’ve been working with volunteers and our friends at Enable to create and trial Easy Read review forms and we’re really pleased to have had our first 20 Easy Read reviews this week! 

What is Easy Read? 

Easy Read documents use plain language and short sentences to simplify the information, with images alongside each piece of text that represent what’s being said to make everything easier to understand. In order to be easily read, the text size is large, with no fancy fonts or italics.  

When getting feedback from want-to-be reviewers, we were also told that writing envelopes and the cost of postage was a barrier to people taking part so our printed forms have a Freepost address for you to send them back to us.

This is just the start - subject to funding we’re also looking at how we can make the Easy Read information submitted by reviewers easier to find and digest! This is still a pilot so please do get in touch with any feedback as to how we can make things better.

Learning Disability Week 2023 

This year, Learning Disability Week takes place from 19 – 25 June. This week aims to raise awareness of the challenges people with learning disabilities faces, and promote change informed by the lived experiences of disabled people. We hope that people with learning disabilities will submit reviews on EuansGuide.com to make sure that everyone can find and share great places to go, and explore new places with confidence thanks to the reviews and experiences of other people who might have similar access requirements.  

Scottish Learning Disability Week 2023 

Earlier this year Scottish Learning Disability Week had an important theme - ‘Lead to Change’. The idea behind the theme was to show how people with learning disabilities can be leaders and promote change to make life more accessible. These changes are led by first-hand experiences, and include things like making public buildings, shopping centres, or theatres more accessible to adjust how society responds to people with learning disabilities, and we can help by having Easy Read reviews on EuansGuide.com.
