January Review Roundup

Welcome to the January review roundup for 2024. It's the start of the New Year at Euan’s Guide, and we are excited to build on the success that we had in 2023 with new reviewers and new venues joining our website. We have had some fantastic reviews this month from all around the UK. We couldn't do what we do without the help of our fantastic volunteer reviewers, so whether you are joining us for the first time or have reviewed with us before, we would like to say a huge thank you!

Places to visit

BeingSickSucks took time to visit the British ironwork centre in Whitehall. The reviewer mentions that the Centre is overall very accessible, and that anyone visiting should wrap up warm on cold days as a lot of the exhibition is outside. There is also a golf buggy available to people who have mobility difficulties, but this is not available all year round. She gives the venue a 4.5-star rating.

Belrock shared an interesting review of a family-run garden, centre and cafe at Ardarden Estate in Dumbarton. “The entrance, shop and tearoom are all on the level with a hard floor, which makes it easy for wheeling. There is a lovely grassed area, which is a peaceful place to sit, full of birdsong. This sounds like a lovely place to visit if you enjoy gardening and the outdoors or just want to sit quietly and enjoy the birdsong.”

Tina Hodgkinson has been reviewing Horizon 22 London's highest free viewing platform with 300-degree views of London and its most iconic landmarks. “Horizon 22 is fabulous. The views are wonderful; there's step-free access, accessible toilets and very helpful staff.” Tina did give some very useful feedback to the venue in her review about the lack of seating on both levels of the viewing platform. By giving this feedback, Tina is helping to make the venue management aware of how things could be made better in the future.

New reviewer JustJules reviewed a quirky gift shop in the centre of Edinburgh, Logan Malloch “Popped into this fabulous gift shop - no steps, and ample space to manoeuvre about.” She also mentioned how helpful the staff are, and they want to make each person's visit as worthwhile as possible. “Lovely, friendly staff. Brian and Phil are so knowledgeable about their products and will tell you funny stories about certain pieces or where the artist/maker is based.” This sounds like a fabulous place to visit if you're looking for a gift for a friend or family member.

AmericanAnneinLondon has written a very interesting review about The National Marine Aquarium . She says, “This is an excellent aquarium, with interesting species and a fabulous shark/ray tank.” Anne also points out some of the ways that the staff could improve their disability awareness and improve the accessibility of the aquarium for disabled people. For example, she advises any visitors to email the team in advance to let them know that you are planning to visit. “I highly recommend emailing in advance because they will advise you on the quietest times to come.”

Places to eat

MrsQ highly recommends a visit to Fernley and the Dairy Barn Café as a fantastic place to visit for all the family. The café specialises in ice cream but also serves hot food and drinks and has a small gift shop. MrsQ mentions“They have a lovely outdoor area for summer and play equipment for children. They have a 9-hole adventure mini golf, which is wheelchair accessible and brilliant fun.”

Dunfordjem has written their first review about a refurbished local restaurant, The Ripon Inn, in North Yorkshire. The review highlights some of the improvements that have been made in accessibility. “The layout inside is very spacious, no zig-zagging around tables. The table layout in the bar is mainly booths which are actually perfect for parties with wheelchair users. Easy to roll up to the table with chair/seats for five others.”

Kempster66 highly recommends Pescado Tapas in Glasgow after visiting to have lunch and catch up with old friends. Her review talks about the access within the restaurant. “Was a wee bit tight to negotiate in my powerchair to get in, but manageable. Spacious once inside and tables easy to get a comfortable position.” The food and friendly staff also get a special mention, “Staff very welcoming and attentive”, and they went on to say, “The portions were very generous and DELICIOUS!” This restaurant sounds like a good place to visit for good food and good friends.

Review of the month - January 2024

January’s review of the month goes to MrsQ, who wrote the review of Fernley’s and the Dairy Barn Café in Melton Mowbray. The review gives good details about the café and the outdoor facilities, including wheelchair-accessible mini golf, which offers a variety of activities for the whole family.
