Disability Action Plan: Consultation

The UK Government are seeking views on the proposed Disability Action Plan and new areas for action it includes. They want to hear from as many people as possible and have an Open Consultation which closes on Friday 6 October.

They say: “This consultation is aimed at anyone with an interest in the action the government will take during 2023 and 2024 to improve the lives of disabled people. Disabled people and disabled people’s organisations may be particularly interested but anyone, including any organisations or individuals, may respond.”

Why we’re responding

Our vision is a world accessible to all disabled people. We want to make it easier, safer and more rewarding for disabled people to find and visit accessible places.

We live in a world where disabled people depend on governments, both central and local, to develop, implement and enforce laws and regulations. It is of vital importance that the voices of disabled people are heard by governments as they review existing regulation and plan new laws.

At Euan's Guide we believe we should amplify the voices of and advocate for our community in whatever ways we can, including by responding to government consultations.

Our responses are informed by what you, our community, tell us – you are the experts. Our volunteers, team and board have lived experience of disability which helps us to identify where there are challenges and barriers which need to be addressed.

By participating in government consultations, Euan's Guide can raise awareness about the importance of disabled access and the specific requirements of disabled people. Our insights can highlight gaps in existing policies and propose solutions to address those gaps.

We run the UK’s largest and longest running Access Survey. This piece of research informs much of our work. We already share the results publicly and know that Government bodies use and refer to it. We will be using this data as part of our response and hope that it will support evidence-based policymaking and decision-making.

Our responses focus on two main areas:

  • Information – the importance of disabled access information to make it easier, safer and more rewarding for disabled people to visit places
  • Experience – the experiences of disabled people and their friends, families and carers should come first

We want be part be of the public debate to play our part in improving access and inclusion for everyone.

The deadline for responses is Friday 6 October – don’t miss chance to have your voice heard.
