100,000 Safer Accessible Toilets

Euan's Guide is asking everyone to order Red Cord Cards on this World Toilet Day.

Disabled access charity Euan’s Guide has now distributed over 100,000 of their Red Cord Cards, which make accessible toilets safer across the UK.

The award-winning charity behind disabled access website EuansGuide.com has made tens of thousands of accessible toilets safer since launching the Red Cord Card initiative in 2015.

After surpassing the 100,000 milestone, Euan’s Guide are asking everyone to order their Red Cord Cards on World Toilet Day (19^th November) to make accessible toilets safer.

Red Cord Cards are pocket-sized notices placed on red emergency cords to remind the public and businesses that red emergency cords should remain untangled and hang freely to the floor.

Red emergency cords are designed to be a way for someone to safely and easily alert people outside the facilities that their assistance is required. The cord needs to be easy to reach for someone sitting on the toilet or lying on the floor. A common problem is that red emergency cords are tied up, cut short, out of reach or missing entirely.

People who have ordered Red Cord Cards have provided Euan’s Guide with feedback on the life-saving initiative.

Nikki said: “I have spent 20 minutes collapsed on the floor unable to get help because of the red cord being tied up in a hospital outpatient toilet and it’s just awful being unable to get help. Having this card and being able to display them will hopefully prevent others from experiencing the same as I have.”

Euan MacDonald, Co-Founder of Euan’s Guide, said: “Making 100,000 accessible toilets safer is an incredible milestone but we want to have a Red Cord Card in every accessible toilet across the country. That is only going to be possible with the support of more people and businesses as we continue to raise awareness of this life-saving issue.”

Every World Toilet Day, Euan’s Guide highlight the issues faced by disabled people when using accessible toilets. The disabled access charity is using World Toilet Day to raise awareness of safer accessible toilets and crucially asking venues and businesses to test the red emergency cord in their accessible toilet by pulling it to make sure the alarm works correctly. They have also produced a series of top tips for venues about how they can improve their accessible facilities.

With 100,000 Red Cord Cards distributed, Euan’s Guide is also extending a big thank you to the Safer Toilets Stars who have ordered packs of Red Cord Cards and attached them to red emergency cords in accessible toilets. This includes disabled influencers such as @Disabled_Eliza and @wheelsnoheels_ on Instagram and TikTok, who have shared videos of why improper red emergency cords are dangerous and how the Euan’s Guide Red Cord Card can make an accessible toilet safer.

They are designed to make accessible toilets safer and instruct people and businesses to not keep the cord tied up, cut short, out of reach or missing entirely.

A Red Cord Card reads: ‘This red emergency cord must hang freely to the floor. If it does not, it may prevent a disabled person from asking for help.’
