World Toilet Day - Sunday 19 November 2023

World Toilet Day was established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001 to tackle the global sanitation crisis? It’s been an official day recognised by the United Nations since 2013, and their aim is to ensure everyone has access to safe, sanitary toilets by 2030.

At Euan’s Guide, we use World Toilet Day to raise awareness of the dangers closer to home when people use accessible toilets in the UK, and as we countdown to World Toilet Day, here are ways you can get involved in helping make accessible toilets safer for disabled people.

Review a Loo

Please review your favourite or local accessible loo! In the same way you might research where you’re going in terms of accessibility, sharing your knowledge helps other people doing the same. By leaving a review on EuansGuide.com you give other people the confidence to visit somewhere new – and we know from our past Access Surveys that accessible toilets are a priority for disabled people when going out.

Venues

If you are involved with a venue here is a simple checklist that will help you – without spending a penny!

Get involved

Where's The Loo

Make sure people know you have an accessible toilet! Putting details on your website and social media is the first step; the second is clear signage for disabled visitors who choose to come to your venue and making sure your staff know how to direct people too. Lastly, you can list on EuansGuide.com for free and share your disabled access information with tens of thousands of people every month.

Cut The Clutter

Accessible toilets should have plenty of space - keep it clear so disabled people can move around easily and without stress. Don’t put bins in a transfer space and find somewhere else to store those highchairs.

Test And Tell

When was the last time you tested the alarm in your disabled loo? Does it work? If someone does raise the alarm, do your staff know what to do? If your alarm has a red pull cord, make sure this hangs to the floor and attach one of our Red Cord Cards

#TestAndTell

If you’re looking to install, upgrade or improve your accessible toilet we’ve created some helpful guidance.

Safer Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets have an emergency assistance alarm system often with a red pull cord that is easily identifiable and reachable from the toilet and the floor close to the toilet. Far too often these cords are tied up, cut short or wrapped around other equipment meaning people in distress are unable to raise the alarm, leaving them trapped with no way to ask for help.

Get started by ordering your Red Cord Cards in time for World Toilet Day. We’d love to send you a bundle of cards – we’re a small charity so donations are welcome, which helps us to continue running the Safer Toilets campaign. Order your cards through the online form, or venues can get them here

Let’s set the cords free this World Toilet Day!
